Choices

The poet says he’s hopelessly in love,

And thus he claims to measure his devotion.

But hopelessness is not a grand emotion,

And tears just cloud the sight of stars above.

  A fool is one who gives his heart in vain,

And squanders time in pointless adulation.

The man most worthy of our admiration

Is one whose love has never brought him pain.

  We cannot move the moon or rule the tide,

For these are tasks beyond mere mortal schemes;

But rule we must our hearts, our hopes, our dreams,

And love not shared ‘tis wise to cast aside.
