CAVEAT EMPTOR
Your latest gift of flowers came today,
Accomp'nied by more words of love and pain;
And as I held the card I wished again
That I could find the proper words to say
To heal your wounds and help you on your way;
The proper phrase that would, at last, explain
That what we've lost I care not to regain;
That debts so great that mere flowers cannot pay.
We grew apart, we two; you must have known
That callous word and deed would some day cost.
And now that worlds apart our dreams have flown,
You feel that every means you must exhaust
To lure me back; but now that you're alone,
At least you've learned the worth of what you've lost!
What would you have me owe you
Who say you've loved me long?
You never gave my spirit wings,
Nor brought my heart a song.
How should I repay you
Who cast my hopes aside?
Your shadow's crept across my soul
'Til dreams have all but died.
Now shall I rekindle
That flame which longs to live.
I owe myself my life, before
There's nothing left to give.
And now, in final payment,
These words you'll find are true;
I owe no debt - You needed me
As ever I needed you.
