LADY
A paradox, a lovely contradiction,
A flower, a flame, a snowfall winter's morn;
A myth, a tale of joyous fiction born;
At times a truth profound, a deep conviction.
A mirror casts on each his own reflection;
The diamond shows back many at one time.
To look on scenes of warmth or bitter rime
Is oftentimes a matter of perception.
So sad! - So many look who have no sight.
So many turn aside and dare not know
This sweet perfection; so must turn in fright
And move on, while protesting as they go
That none can touch this jewel so shining bright,
While seeking one that does not dazzle so.
I bring you comfort, lonely sea,
And peace, and sweet tranquility.
Take pause; your rush unto the shore
Can wait but just a moment more.
Take pause, and dream a bit with me.
For I have not forgot, my friend,
Your steady willingness to lend
Your strength and deep serenity
In times when life has troubled me;
In times when life was near its end.
But now I would repay your grace
In my small way, in this small place.
I've come to tell what's come to pass.
So listen, as ashore you cast
Your icy shreds of briny lace.
I sat with you and studied well
The secrets that you cared to tell;
I learned of patience, learned to wait,
Learned of permanence and fate,
To still seek Heaven, while enduring Hell.
Dear mentor, I now proffer my hand
In gratitude, for in this land
I've found that most elusive goal -
One woman who deserves my soul;
One diamond, among the grains of sand.
I thank you, friend, for all the years
You cast out pain and banished fears;
I've shared my joy, and now depart -
Until she leaves, and takes my heart -
Then I'll return, to share my tears.
